Final Game 1: Broncos 15 Bills 14
Hello Bills fans. As you all know, The Denver Broncos defeated the Buffalo Bills 15-14 with a last second field goal by Jason Elam. I just want to say something before I go on. I hate it when the Bills lose but realized after the game that it is indeed just a game. Backup Tight End Kevin Everett was seriously injured early in the third quarter. On the opening second half kickoff, he was going to make the tackle and lowered his head. He fell to the ground and just didn’t move. I was thinking to myself that in live action the hit didn’t look that bad. I thought maybe he had a concussion or a stinger. When the put him on the stretcher and he still didn’t move was very scary. At that moment I knew he was seriously injured and was being rushed to the hospital. It turns out that he suffered a serious neck injury and was operated on at 8 pm. There is no word yet on if he has movement in his arms and legs. Lets hope that the surgery was successful and that Everett regains movement. Its sad to see anyone get hurt especially during a game. Everett is only 25 years old and had a lot of life in front of him. Lets pray that Everett makes a full recover. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.
The game started with the Bills getting the ball first. On their first drive, the Bills offense looked good and moved the ball down the field. They got in field goal range but gave up a sack that pushed them back to almost midfield. Moorman had a beautiful punt that was downed at the one-yard line. Jay Cutler pulled a college play and pitched the ball the Travis Henry for a 30 plus yard gain. The defense held Denver in check and they punted the ball away to Roscoe Parrish. This was definitely the play of the game. Roscoe Parrish ran 74 yards for the score and put the Bills in the lead 7-0. Our special teams were one of the few bright spots of this game. The offense sputtered for most of the day. Terrence McGee had a terrific kick return in the second quarter that I thought he was going to take to the house. He was tripped up at mid-field giving the offense excellent field position. The offense moved the ball but came up without any points due to Rian Lindells missing a 45-yard field goal. After the missed field goal, Denver was driving down the field. Thank God Jim Leonhard who was in because Ko Simpson was injured, came up with an interception and returned it 36 yards. The Bills were back in business and were setting up for a 53-yard Rian Lindell field goal. A false start penalty pushed them back five yards. This was out of Lindells range so with eight seconds left, J.P. Losman was trying to get the Bills closer and then call a timeout. He ends up throwing an interception on an attempted screen pass. I for one didn’t like the plays that were being called on that drive. Another wasted scoring opportunity and now the Bills go into halftime up 7-6. It could have been at least 10-6.
The second half started out with the terrible injury to Kevin Everett. The offense did manage to get into the end zone in the third quarter. Marshawn Lynch had a couple of great runs on this drive and his 23-yard run was a thing of beauty. Lynch is going to be a special player for us. He has the toughness, speed and balance to be a tremendous back in this league. The Bills were now up 14-6. I thought we took the momentum and were going to run with it. At the end of the third quarter, Denver manages to get into the end zone but the two-point conversion attempt failed. The Bills were still in the lead 14-12. The inability to move the ball by the Bills offense gave Denver multiple chances to take the lead. Jason Elam missed a field goal with 3 minutes and change left in the game. All the Bills needed to do were get a few first downs and ice this game. All game, the offense didn’t take many shots down the field. It was third down and I believe five to go with two minutes and change remaining. J.P. Losman unloads one down the field to Lee Evans but the ball was thrown to the wrong shoulder. It would have been a touchdown and game would have been over. Instead Denver gets the ball back, converts on a few 3rd and 4th downs, and Elam kicks a field goal with the clock at one second to send Denver off with a win. Final Score Broncos 15 Bills 14.
This game was not the best game for the Bills offense and pass defense. Not only did we lose the game, we lost a bunch of players. Kevin Everett, Jason Webster, Ko Simpson, and Coy Wire were all injured. Webster broke his forearm, Simpson fractured his ankle and Coy Wire sprained his MCL. What a way to start the season. Hopefully this team can rebound from all of these injuries and come out next week and play well. Lets Go Bills and keep Kevin Everett in your prayers.
Bright Spots: Bills Special Teams, Marshawn Lynch running the ball, Josh Reed, and Posluszny.
